Gunns picks partner for Bell Bay pulp mill

date

In a statement to the ASX, Gunns said that “the company involved has significant international experience in the pulp and paper sector”, and that it is “moving forward positively” on the Bell Bay project (pictured).

“In parallel with the joint venture process, Gunns has continued to progress negotiations with project finance banks with market conditions in the sector having recently improved,” the company said.

Reports earlier this month linked Swedish company Sodra with the project, though there is also speculation that a Chinese company may be the mystery partner.

The news comes as a poll was released detailing increased local opposition to the mill, with the EMRS poll claiming that 65 per cent of Tasmanians believe the mill should not go ahead if it results in foreign control of the state’s natural assets.

The poll, commissioned by Tasmanians Against the Pulp Mill (TAP), asked whether the government should allow the mill to proceed if it results in foreign control of water, land and forests.
