Heidelberg serves CTP to Headland Press

Prior to the installation of the Prosetter 102 the company had outsourced its plate work; a practice that can compromise quality and deliverability.

Craig Kelso, Headland Press production manager, says, “The installation of the CTP unit has enabled us to bring plate production inhouse thereby raising quality standards and also reducing production costs.”

Headland Press, a family run operation established in 1976, employs 30 people. The company services a broad commercial client base, which includes print brokers and agencies. The work printed is just as varied ranging from business stationary to A4 brochures and books through to posters.

The installation of the Prosetter 102 coincided with Headland Press winning a massive printing contract with a very tight deadline.

“The job was one of the biggest we have ever produced. The sheer size of it meant that we would have had to outsource the plates to several suppliers compromising quality, consistency and creating more production management headaches than we needed,” says Kelso.

“The job included a cover featuring a blue/grey marbled image. Using film the dot gain experienced meant that the final product was fairly average. However, when we ran the job through the Prosetter 102 the final job was of an extremely high standard with all the features of the design clearly distinguishable.”

The Prosetter 102 uses violet CtP technology to produce plates from 400x510mm up to 811x1055mm. The unit produces plates with shorter makeready times and a quicker run-up to production speed. It has been responsible for a new growth phase at Headland Press, with the company recording its biggest turnover for one month in October, an increase of 50 per cent over its previously best month.
