Heidelberg Wiesloch factory celebrates 50 years

The plant, currently the largest printing press factory in the world, was established within the city boundaries of Wiesloch in 1957.

However, as the site has been expanded over the past 15 years, it has moved ever closer to the neighboring city of Walldorf and now at least a third of the production site lies within the boundaries of Walldorf.

The company decided to rename the site in its anniversary year, 2007, to reflect these changing needs and the expectations of the City of Walldorf and Wiesloch municipal council.

The opening of the production site 15km to the south of the city of Heidelberg in 1957 represented an important milestone in the history of the company, which was founded 157 years ago.

Today, the Wiesloch-Walldorf factory with its approximately 6400 employees and covering an area of 860,000sq m is the largest of Heidelberg’s 14 production sites all over the world, and lays claim to being the largest and most modern printing press factory in the world.

The company’s sheetfed offset presses are assembled in Wiesloch-Walldorf and the small parts and electronic components required for these presses are also produced there.

The new assembly hall at Wiesloch-Walldorf – hall 11 – will be completed in the northern summer of 2007. The hall measures 35,000sq m  – equivalent to almost five soccer fields – and will be used to assemble a new generation of large-format presses.

Heidelberg is investing around €45m in the new press hall.
