Historical changes afoot at PIAA

The changes have been made in an effort to keep pace with the vast changes in the composition of the industry’s workforce over the past decade. These changes have seen the scope of people employed in the industry, so that many are not employed by their businesses under this award.

Additionally, a number of new companies joining the industry do not qualify for the award. These companies could only achieve Associate Member status precluding them from representation on policy-making councils and committees.

The PIAA says the constitutional change was an important part of its goal to embrace the full dimension of the industry and, as the peak body, to effectively represent industry interests to governments and other key stakeholders.

Chris Segaert, PIAA national president, says the Association needs to broaden its service development and delivery options which traditionally have been seen to focus primarily on defending SMEs against unions, government, big printers and suppliers.

“But in today’s world we have a new and ever changing industry. We too must change to reflect this and ensure we are able to speak effectively for the industry and protect its interests”, he says.

In addition to the constitutional change, the National Council has also endorsed a restructure of the Association’s organisational capacity. Gary Donnison, PIAA CEO, has presented a far-reaching plan to ensure the Association is able to satisfy the needs of all its members – small, medium and large. Details are expected to be finalised in November.

“The organisation has been restricted by its outdated structure. The new structure will empower staff and provide greater efficiencies. It will ensure that members get the services they need to grow and be profitable”, Donnison says.

The restructure and constitutional changes should be in place early in 2005.
