Industry veteran Grace retires from Heidelberg

Grace, 61, began his career in the industry as a lithographic printer and platemaker for Sydney-based printer WC Penfolds in 1964. He officially retired on April 30, 2010.

He says, “I’ve been so lucky and I have had such a great life in the industry and with Heidelberg. But I’m at the part of my life where I would like to do some things for myself and I have been given the opportunity to explore new horizons.

Grace will continue to run a number of training courses with a focus on print education, as well as remain an avid print judge for a number of competitions including the Australian PICAs and the SAPPI international printer of the year award.

Grace says, “I love print judging as it gives you a window into the industry in terms of the latest technology and techniques being used.”

Commenting on the major changes he has witnesses during his time in the industry, Grace says the industry has streamlined its efficiency, improved the quality of sheetfed and web printing as well significantly increased its uptake of digital technology.

He says, “The most notable changes I have seen in the industry are the way we have been able to reduce waste both in time and materials. We have also improved our quality beyond belief with the introduction of CTP, the digitalisation of presses and the development of good quality digital printing.”

Grace continues, “I possibly had the best job in this industry, it’s has given me so much and I really want to give something back.”
