Italian printer orders world’s first 96pp webs

Managing director Peirluigi Guerini told Australian Printer that the company had ordered the new presses to gain production efficiencies, provide more production options for its current customer base, and to win low run (around 500,000) gravure work.

Mazzucchell is a $160m a year family owned operation, based near Milan printing in the publishing, commercial and supermarket flyer markets. Some 30 per cent of its business comes from outside Italy. Its size puts it I the same band as the mid-tier Aussie heatset print companies including AIW, Franklin, and Cadillac.

The company is not phased by the challenges involved in taking the world’s first 96pp wed, in fact it installed the first Goss 64pp Sunday press and has been a pioneer in several areas.

Goss International first announced that it would develop the Sunday 5000 press in October 2007, this drupa the company has a full unit on display. A 2860mm web width will allow printing of 96 full A4 magazine pages per cylinder revolution at up to 40,000 impressions per hour, producing an incredible 3.84 million pages an hour. Gapless blanket technology is an integral component in the big press, reducing vibration to enable high speed and high print quality with the wider 12×4 long-grain cylinder configuration.

Prepress will be provided by Agfa CTP, with finishing yet to be decided but it is a three horse race between Muller Martini, Ferag and Rima. The bindery in fact will be run by an external company, but within the new plant Mazzucchell is building, in what is believed to be an Italian first.
