Kwik Kopy store changes hands

A Sydney family that has acquired its fifth Kwik Kopy franchise is bullish about using its experience and buying power to grow the store.

Daniel McKenzie bought the Miller Street, North Sydney franchise in October in partnership with his father Peter and sister Susie.

Peter also owns the Neutral Bay franchise, while Peter's brother, Mark, owns Clarence Street, Mascot and Parramatta.

Daniel is now managing Miller Street after spending the previous six years in charge of Neutral Bay. That business is now being run by Susie.

He told ProPrint that the family's franchises function independently, but band together to source cheaper paper.

He said the family had been keen to buy Miller Street because of the suburb's high density of corporate tenants and because the store had been underperforming.

"We want it to be a shining star. It's in the right area. There are so many wonderful corporate customers around. We want to expand."

McKenzie said the new owners were very confident of growth, but declined to reveal their forecasts.

That growth will partly be fuelled by the franchise's new websites offering and an increased focus on signage, he said.

"One of the key areas we're looking for a lot of growth in and that we're fantastic in [at Neutral Bay] is wide-format."

McKenzie told ProPrint that the family's strong customer service would also help Miller Street expand.

He said he had been able to turn new clients into major accounts during his time at Neutral Bay and would look to do the same at Miller Street.

"We have a very high customer retention in our Neutral Bay store," he said.

There are also plans to add more kit, although nothing has yet been finalised, he said.

"There was nothing wrong with the equipment we had, but we'll definitely have new equipment coming in in the near future."

McKenzie said the family might one day acquire a sixth franchise, but that it was currently focused on consolidating Miller Street.
