Label firm QLM greens up with Gallus press buy

The Brisbane company will take the wraps off the press, which debuted at LabelExpo Europe 2009, at an open day event on 3 June.

QLM general manager Simon Pugh told ProPrint the press would be used to enhance the company’s offering in the ‘prime label market’, which is focused on the production of work such as wine bottle labels. The purchase also marks QLM’s move into the wide-format labelling sector.

Pugh said QLM has been a “Gallus house” for the past six years. The company has been “rationalising” its equipment base after ending up with kit from five different manufacturers prior to its decision to focus on using Gallus machinery.

“We’ve been getting to the point of capacity constraints, and have been looking to step into the next level of the business,” Pugh said. “This machine will enable us to grow with our clients.”

Pugh also pointed to several environmental benefits as motivating the purchase. The core of the press is constructed from granite not steel, which yields a carbon impact.

The press also has a comparatively small 11m web length, reducing paper waste, and uses UV ‘cold lamp’ technology, which reduces electricity use.

“This is one of the first of its kind. You could run chocolate on top of this lamp and it won’t melt,” Pugh said.

“We have a fully air-conditioned factory, so if we have a machine that produces heat we’re just combating that and increasing our carbon footprint,” he added.

Pugh said the press would not be replacing any machinery. He added that the company’s lean manufacturing principles meant it could find room for the new press on its existing shopfloor.

“Lean manufacturing has been helping us to reorganise our space. It’s had a phenomenal benefit,” he said.

The company is, however, planning to offload one of the two Mark Andy Aqua Flex presses that it uses for EDP label printing. The remaining press is currently being engineered to handle the workload of both presses.

QLM has 60 staff and sales offices in Sydney and Melbourne.
