Megacolour hits 15m impressions on new Heidelberg packaging press

The company’s six-colour Heidelberg CD 102, which was installed late last year as the centrepiece of a $2 million spend, was acquired to bring all its services in-house; Megacolour also operates a five-colour Speedmaster 74, but was previously sending out A1-format work.

The CD 102 was optioned with inline spectrophotometry, allowing the Camperdown-based company to hit the ISO 12647 standard – essential in packaging, said Megacolour sales & marketing director Gavin Smith.

“The growth we’ve been experiencing meant we needed to move up to a higher capacity and larger format,” he added.

“We’re doing a lot of point-of-sale work now that goes across small offset and large offset. We wanted to keep all the work in-house to be in control of quality and turnaround times so we have kept the A3 machine and positioned the CD102-6 as the heartbeat of our operation.

“The fact that we can print on a huge range of substrates, including heavy packaging boards has resulted in us gaining more work from existing clients and also attracting new business. Packaging is a growth segment and we are now ideally positioned to benefit from this trend,” said Smith.

Megacolour managing director Michael Fang said the $2 million investment showed the team “believe in printing”.

“We are committed to working with the latest technology to drive profits and productivity,” said Fang.

“The new press has clocked up around 15 million impressions in 10 months. And that’s not everything we’ve done, but it is an indicator of the power of this machine.”

Fang also hinted at further investments on the horizon, including a digital upgrade.
