Memjet and HP settle patent lawsuit

Memjet has dropped all legal action against HP after reaching a settlement with the American tech giant over a patent infringement lawsuit filed in 2015.

Memjet says it has dismissed the lawsuit after reaching a global settlement with HP, the details of which are confidential.

CEO of Memjet, Len Lauer says, “We are pleased to have reached a settlement with HP. We will continue to stay focused on creating innovative printing technology that enables our customers to realise optimal speeds, quality and costs.”

Memjet launched the action on August 11 last year claiming HP had infringed on eight patents relating to its single-pass page-wide inkjet technology, known as Waterfall. It alleged HP had used the same technology in its printers.

Memjet claimed its Waterfall technology was replicated in HP’s PageWide office and wide format models, and also its T-Series inkjet web printers and asserted the technology could be used in future HP wide format and 3D printers.

At the time, Memjet stated, “Memjet has invested substantial resources in the research and development of its page-wide Waterfall technology over the last decade.

“Memjet has protected that investment through the development of its significant patent portfolio, including several thousand US and foreign patents in the page-wide inkjet printing space.”

HP launched the PageWide range in 2015, however the T-series has been on the market since its drupa launch in 2008 and the Pro-X office printers with PageWide technology were launched in 2012, therefore it appears Memjet held off on taking action for several years.

It is common for manufacturers use Memjet technology, however this is done under license.

HP has not commented on the settlement.
