Mother of ironies as Google wins print award

The internet giant was awarded the prize by the judges at USA Today, with Google’s Creative Lab beating off three finalists form 100 entries to win the contest. The six judges were independent of USA Today, and drawn from the advertising a media sectors. Executives at USA Today are now considering what do.

The $1m is to be spent on print advertising in USA Today. Google has said it will donate the prize to groups that need the space. The winning advert was promoting Google’s virtual hangout area. Google’s Creative Lab also operates a news aggregator service.

The contest was established to remind creatives that print still had a primary place in communication. The judges commended Google for ‘understanding the palette’.
