New Arc design wins award for Heidelberg

Based on Heidelberg’s New Arc design, the press and control station, initially unveiled at drupa 2008, received the award in the industry category.

Eckhard Köbler, head of industrial design at Heidelberg, says, “Previously, both the brand and the product focused on a key aspect of machine operation such as the printing unit. With the New Arc design, we have dared to widen our horizons to include trend statements, environments, and our corporate identity.”

The Speedmaster XL 162, a large-format sheetfed press for print format 7b, primarily aimed at commercial, publishing, and industrial packaging printers, is operated from the Prinect Press Center. Heidelberg says that the geometric structure and large surfaces are key features of the product design with the feeder and delivery portals on the Speedmaster XL 162 drawing their inspiration from European and Asian urban environments, symbolising an input-output concept.

Organised by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design in collaboration with the European Centre for Architecture, Art Design and Urban Planning, the Good Design Award dates back to 1950 and enjoys global recognition. It aims to reward new, advanced, and innovative product concepts. Last year, an international panel of judges in New York and Los Angeles selected 500 products from 34 countries from hundreds of submissions.
