OSS buys Designjet for resolution and speed

Greg Edkins, director of OSS Digital says, “Resolution is a big thing for us. If a client has spent thousands on photography they expect the best reproduction possible, and this is particularly true for the high-end retail market. The print speeds on this Designjet are fast, but the resolution is outstanding and the colour gamut excellent.”

Another production benefit, says Edkins, is the printer’s capacity to run unattended. He says, “One of the keys to success is a machine that doesn’t require constant attention by the operator. We load this printer at night, send down a bunch of prints and go home with confidence the jobs will be completed. Most days we output around 120 metres overnight. Being able to do this means we save time and money and can push through more work”.

Since its installation the HP Designjet L65500 has enabled Edkins to introduce new products including 2.2m wide, seamless, light box images. He says, “With this machine and the film substrate we are using we can recreate the Duratrans style prints of old at a fraction of the cost. When you have high-end clients it makes all the difference to be able to produce quality backlit images without joins or skins. This gives us a real point of differentiation in the market”.

Five years ago the Leichardt-based company shifted focus from general signage to the retail market. Since then OSS Digital has grown from five people to 35.
