The company received the award in the Innovation and Business category at the Australian Training Awards at the Crown Entertainment Complex in Melbourne earlier this month.
Based in the Sydney suburb of Moorebank, PMP Print is part of PMP Limited, providing commercial printing, binding and mass distribution services to retail, publishing and organisational clients.
PMP Print staff are guaranteed to receive the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in a dynamic and competitive industry. A combination of on-the-job technical training for production-based staff and off-site professional development for administrative personnel has bolstered the number of staff with formal qualifications from 47 per cent to 86 per cent.
Training has facilitated a culture of ongoing improvements such as standardised procedures across departments, a reduction in print and landfill waste and lost time injuries.
In addition to providing a best practice example to another 14 sites within the PMP group, PMP Print has developed a training programme that TAFE, other training bodies and industry groups have identified as an industry training benchmark.
According to David Hind, ANTA chairman, the key to becoming internationally competitive is recognition by employers that training is absolutely critical to achieving success.
“Employers such as PMP Print are setting the standard in on-the-job training, and are reaping the rewards as a result,” Hind says.
PMP Print was one of three organisations flying the New South Wales flag at the national awards ceremony. TAFE NSW’s North Coast Institute of TAFE, based in Port Macquarie, was named the Large Training Provider of the Year, and Ballina High School, a comprehensive co-educational local state high school, won the VET in Schools Excellence Award.
The Australian Training Awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of apprentices, trainees and students as well as the contribution of enterprises and training providers to skilling Australia.
The awards are hosted by the Australian National Training Authority and supported by the Australian Government Department of Education, Science and Training.
