Qld newspaper closes after owner passes away

Veteran Queensland newspaper Tully Times has shut down operations due to the passing of its owner and editor John Hughes last month.

Hughes purchased the weekly publication in 2006 and served as editor in chief for 10 years before the 61-year-old’s sudden death in North Queensland.

The Tully Times had been in print for some 50 years, and employed two full time journalists.

The newspaper was printed by a News Limited owned press in Cairns, North Queensland, and was a member of the Queensland Country Press Association.

Hughes had been a strong advocate for keeping regional newspapers in print during his time as an editor.  The masthead had no online presence, only publishing news in its weekly printed publication.
