Resolution upgrades to meet demand

Rising sales has compelled Melbourne wide format printer Resolution Imaging to upgrade to a new wide format UV flatbed as it struggled to meet demand.

The 12-staff firm installed a Truepress Jet W1632UV in only August 2013, but director Darren Watkins says the company has become so swamped with work that trading it in for a faster W3200UV model is necessary.

“Demand is ever-increasing and clients want jobs done on demand tomorrow regardless of run size, so we have been completely flat out,” he says.

“We always make deadlines, but it has been hard to make everything fit and we want to make sure we always meet client needs well into the future.

“We also do installs so being able to produce quickly is paramount.”

Watkins says Resolution has been so flooded with work it has not had the capacity to actively pursue new work and clients, and now with faster output it can take the business to the next level.

“It produces a better quality print, opens the door for longer run work and can print with white ink which we seem to be doing more of,” he says.

“The market for printing white onto window displays or clear film and we are doing a lot more polyethylene (PE) work both for temporary promotional displays or permanent office branding.”

Watkins says he would like to go after this market more as it has been a big source of growth since the previous printer was installed, and is considering using the roll-to-roll function of the hybrid machine to print up to 3.2m wide.

Besides PE, Resolution mainly uses XBoard, ReBoard and Corflute, also running foamboards like Kapa, Gator and ForeX substrates but Watkins is hoping to use more Victorian-made 10-20mm rigid boards.

He says he looked at alternative models but it made more sense to trade in the W1632UV for an upgrade than add an extra printer.

The W3200UV can print up to 150sqm an hour at 1000dpi.
