SA paper mill fire damages printer

A fire in South Australia has caused damage to a Kimberly Clark paper mill last night, the blaze targeting a large printing machine.

According to fire-fighter reports, the source of the flames was a large printing press which caught alight around 6pm Sunday night at the Millicent paper mill in SA.

Acting mill manager Patrick Butler told ProPrint the blaze only caused damage to converting machinery at the factory, and rebuffed reports the fire had cost the factory millions of dollars.

“The fire did take place last night but the damage cost isn’t even close to $1m, only affecting a small bit of converting equipment,” says Butler.

Service crews were able to prevent the blaze from spreading further, and CFS investigators did not believe it to be suspicious.

Kimberly Clark’s SA factory operates as the Australian arm for the US corporation. The Millicent mill is a major producer of tissue and toilet paper. Its mill in Tantanoola, SA was demolished in 2012.

The same mill was ignited with an accidental fire in 2012 due to an excess of paper dust.
