Scott Mohammed takes NSW LIA graduate of the year award

The seven finalist were Adam Sim, Pegasus Print; Jennifer Jervis, JCS Screen Print; Tommy Phimphakaysone, Fairfax Printers; Joanne Wilson, Sinnott Bros; Brendan Leeson, Hannapak; Kerry Hale, PMP Print and Scott Mohammed.

David Wells – who was appointed the new NSW LIA president on the night – said, “It is a pleasure and a privilege to be appointed the president of an association such as the LIA. The graduate of the year awards enable us to see the cream of the crop among our young industry members and what they have achieved, and we look forward to seeing what they will achieve.”

The night also featured a keynote address from Jack Benyon, former managing director of John Sands, who led the company to become the biggest commercial printer in Australia.

To the attended guest and graduates Benyon said, “Today we have to ensure that the young people in our industry keep on the ball, that they keep learning and keep inquiring because the speed of change in phenomenal.”

Commenting on his win Scott Mohammed said, “It has been a long hard road, juggling study, work and a family but with the support of my colleagues, parents and my lovely wife, I got here.”

Richard Timson, eastern region manager for Heidelberg also spoke on the night saying, “This industry is blending together and ultimately one person will have to do numerous jobs, so when it comes to graduates, we need the smartest people.”

Mohammed will now go on to compete with winners from Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland at the LIA national conference in November this year.

The finalists will compete for two prizes, the $15,000 GAMAA – LIA National Graduate Scholarship Prize and The LIA – Printing Industries Future Leaders Award, which is an all expenses paid trip to the Ipex exhibition in the UK.
