Signarama Oakleigh gears up with Roland printer-cutter

Signarama’s Oakleigh franchise is upgrading to a wide format printer and cutter from Roland DG, becoming the first Australian Signarama to do so. Signarama says the extra width of the 1,625mm XR-640 as well as its speed, versatile ink configurations and fast-drying Eco-Sol Max 2 inks, as well as service and support were all deciding factors in the purchase.

Rohan Blackburn, manager at Signarama Oakleigh, says, “The XR-640 has lived up to my expectations and performed well. The reliability of the machine gives me confidence, and the quality of work is excellent. We are really pleased with it. It fitted straight into our production because we had already been using Roland and were familiar with the VersaWorks software. “Roland have been excellent with the training and support. The support and the five-year warranty was definitely a factor in my decision to stay with Roland.” Blackburn says Roland’s new Eco-Sol Max 2 inks are a marked improvement on the previous range, with faster drying times that have shortened production times. He tells Australian Printer, “The production throughput has probably quadrupled from the older Roland printer that we had, an SP540. The difference is astounding – it is black and white. “The colours are also good, we opted for the six-colour machine and the white. The flexibility with the colours has been better than what we were expecting. So we are really happy. Normally you get a bit of buyer’s remorse, but we have had no problems.” While the Signarama Oakleigh staff have experimented with the option to customise profiles for printing on different materials through Roland’s VersaWorks software, Blackburn says the manufacturer’s pre-set profiles produce the best results without having to ‘muck around’. He adds that he has had curiosity calls from other Signarama franchise owners to find out about the installation and how the machine is performing, and that the franchise network helped him to make the decision in the first place. He says, “We have regular owner’s meetings where we get together and discuss what is happening in the industry, suppliers, products and our new equipment. When I was making the decision I was able to bounce it off people who had a more modern Roland. You have got people in the same boat that you have built up a level of trust with. “We have been happier than we expected, we have got more from the printer than we were expecting. So we are really pleased.”
