Study focuses on digital labels

The study titled ‘What do converters want? Emerging opportunities for colour digital printiing of labels and packaging’ will take a look at the future for this nascent market for colour digital printing. Bob Leahey, associate director of InfoTrends’ colour digital label and packaging consulting service, says, “Colour digital printing is established in label converting, but not in folding cartons and flexible packaging, and other categories. We want to find out which converters are close to adopting colour digital, and what it will take to get them to do so.”

Infotrends says that two elements will make up the report’s primary research. The first, a structured, web-based survey of at least 200 converters, mostly in North America, will aim at getting quantitative insights. The other element, a programme of at least 24 personal interviews with converters, aims at qualitative inputs. All survey and interview respondents will be experienced managers at companies that print labels or packaging.

InfoTrends’ report aims to provide insight on critical issues including:

  • Converters’ pain points with both colour digital and analogue printing
  • Technologies used now, as well as ones they either plan to buy or have rejected
  • Awareness and perceptions of key vendors of colour digital presses
  • Enhancements converters want most from colour digital presses and printers
  • Related products they want, such as finishing lines and workflow software

InfoTrends will also include in its report a special supplement that addresses these same topics in China. Leahey adds, “We’ll investigate China also, because that country is a vital market for makers of package printing and converting equipment. Infotrends will base the report’s China supplement on at least 10 interviews in China with selected converters there, as well as desk research and interviews.”
