Three Melbourne printers join forces

A massive merger is happening in Melbourne with three print companies shaking hands over a $50m turnover end-to-end business by September with numerous jobs on the chopping block. The merger will see prominent print companies Ability Press and Docklands Press buy Mercedes Waratah and M&M Binders and move into their 10000sqm Port Melbourne facility.

Speaking with Australian Printer, Michael Wu, Ability Press owner, says it was last month when the three competitors decided to merge. Wu says, “We didn’t have a relationship before the merger but we have been around for a long time as competitors. “Now we will merge and the company will be a strong force in the industry. We are not trying to take control of the market but this ensures we are a sustainable business.” While Wu was happy to discuss the small details of the deal he did not want to talk about number of staff that will still have a job after the companies’ merger. Wu says, “There are some 50 staff members in each company but we have not discussed what will happen there. “Of course we don’t want our staff to lose their job so we will try to give everyone a job.” Docklands director Moody Aboughattas and Ability managing director Michael Wu will run the company, with Wu confirming that most of the equipment from Ability Press and Docklands Press will be sold. “As we looked inside the Port Melbourne facility we could see that there was not much space so there will be minimal equipment that will be moved to the facility.” Wu says. “This is really good news for our customers, who will now enjoy a wide range of services from under the one roof. “This will also ensure that there is much more quality control of jobs with fast turnarounds.”
