Printing will take place in various locations across Canada – Halifax, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. The contract will come into effect in 2010 and will last until 2028.

Transcontinental said it would invest about $200m during 2009-2010 in a new Canada-wide platform for newspaper and flyer printing.

Phillip Crawley, publisher and chief executive officer of The Globe and Mail, said: “High-quality colour production capacity has always been a key point of distinction for The Globe and Mail.

“Transcontinental’s commitment to providing the most progressive high-speed colour printing capability will keep us at the leading edge.”

Transcontinental also produces The New York Times for the upper New York state and Ontario markets.
