WA PICA awards celebrate quality printing

Scott Print dominated the West Australia PICA Awards night, winning gold medals in 14 categories, including the FutureNow Workforce Development and Green Stamp environmental categories, as well as the Kodak Best of Category Award for the Midland Atelier book. The Western Australian 2013 Printing Industries Craftsmanship Awards (PICA), recognising excellence in printing, was held at the Hyatt Perth – the first of the state PICA competitions.

A record number of entrants from a wider selection of companies in this year’s contest vied for 40 gold, 54 silver and 33 bronze awards across print and business categories, with new awards for 3D printing, Best Entry by an Apprentice, the Media Super Future Leaders Award and the Green Stamp resource efficiency award. The LIA Graduate of the Year went to Timothy Smith of Quality Press, and the winner of the Media Super Future Leaders Award was Manish Shah, also of Quality Press, a pre-press, printing and finishing house based in Perth. Each will now represent WA in the national contest, as will all the Gold Award winners. Phil Brown of Promotional Graphics was also honoured with the Fujifilm 2013 PICA Printing Industry Recognition award, for his work on the WA PICA committee over many years. Ainslie Lamb, chairman of WA PICA, says the awards are focused on quality, an ideal that looks forward and one that is crucial to the ongoing health of the industry. Change was also at the forefront of speakers’ minds. Susan Heaney, national president of Printing Industries, says the world is changing at an unprecedented rate and business owners need to concentrate on their businesses now more than ever, particularly as the country transitions away from a resources-based economy. She says, “Government also sees this move, and has provided Printing Industries with assistance to extend its Apprentice Mentor program.” Sturt Eastwood, general manager commercial division at FujiFilm, adds, “Our ability to adapt and innovate is key to our survival, but there is always a place for beauty and a timeless character around the concept of quality.” Tasmania and Queensland will hold their PICA events next, they are slated for October 12, followed by the Victorian PICA on November 8, South Australia and Northern Territory on November 15, and the ACT Page Awards 22 November. NSW launched its call for PICA entries on August 20, with a presentation night planned for December 6.
