WA printing companies came out in force to celebrate their efforts at the Printing Industry Craftmanship Awards (PICA).
The competition recognised thirteen companies with medals across the 30 different print and design categories.
Quality Press won the Judges Award for its offset-printed book, Perth Zoo Saving Wildlife. Its managing director, Atish Shah, received the Media Super Industry Contribution Award.
Quality Press and Scott Print were frequent visitors to the stage, winning each winning seven gold medals each and 16 medals apiece in total.

Graeme Young, general manager at Quality Press says, “We are delighted to take out the Judges Award for best of the best. It won due to the vibrancy and density of the colour and the fold and finish.” Perth Zoo is a regular client for Quality Press.
Young says, “We have 16 different nationalities of tradesmen in the company, and they bring a tremendous level of skill and experience to us. Winning so many golds, and the Judges Award is testimony to their abilities.”
Rio Chard, chair of the Western Australia PICA Committee says “There was a real sense of change in the atmosphere. Whilst we paid homage to many legends of the industry, there was an overall excitement about what the future holds. It was great to see many diverse companies represented in the spread of wins across the evening”.
Scott Print and Picton Press shared FutureNow’s Commitment to Workforce Development Award for their commitment to recruiting and developisng a flexible, diverse and suitably trained workforce. Scott Print also won the Environment Award, for a high standard of managing and improving upon environmental impact.
Andrew Macaulay, chief executive of Printing Industries Association of Australia says, “There was an obvious air of celebration and optimism in the room. The support that the industry show to each other continues to inspire me”.

Saeid Safa of Picton Press received LIA’s Apprentice of the Year Award.
Scott Print won gold for their work on one or two colour printing, presentation folders, booklets/catalogues/magazines (digital up to 48pp text), annual report/prospectus and yearbooks, book printing (offset, wiro, spiral), stationery suite and point of sale.
Quality Press came first place in leaflets/folded leaflets (offset), booklets/catalogues/magazines (offset over 48pp text), book printing (offset, case bound), book printing (offset, bound, square back finish), book printing (digital, wiro), direct mail, and large format for both indoor and outdoor use.
Discus on demand won gold for leaflets/folded leaflets (digital), book printing (digital, case bound) and sheet fed labels. Advance Press won first place for booklets/catalogues/magazines (offset up to 48pp text) and book printing (digital bound, square back finish). 7 west media took out gold for newspaper inserts (both web fed heatset and web fed cold set) and newspapers.
Other gold medal winners included Picton Press for packaging, Fast Finishing for book binding, Intrafoil for embellishment, Multi-colour Australia for roll fed labels and Graphic Source for self promotion.
