Whirlwind whips up digital

Trade printer Whirlwind expects to grow its digital printing business by 20 per cent in the next year as printers increasingly look to new technology. Speaking with Australian Printer, Andrew Cester, chief executive of Whirlwind, says the company started offering its customers digital services 18 months ago and it has grown strongly since then.

Cester says, “Of a small base our digital output has grown fast. We are giving our clients flexibility and versatility. When we started to offer digital to our clients it was from zero and today it accounts for just under 10 per cent of our overall revenue. “The main reason we are growing digitally is because small to medium sized printers are really looking into return on investment in capital and overheads, as well as the logistics of delivering the product across Australia, and they are turning to trade. “We are expecting this section of our business grow by 20 per cent in the next six to 12 months.” He says another contributing factor for the company’s significant growth in digital trade printing is due to its W3P MIS solution. “The take up of W3P has been quite rapid, so clients who use this product are keeping their business with us and we expect this to continue on a positive path,” Cester says. Whirlwind has the IGen IS150 and the Indigo 5600 seven colour, both of which it says are supplementing the digital growth, but Cester says he plans to further expand this section in the next 12 months as well. The Melbourne-based family business, which started in 1996 as a graphic design company, today offers end-to-end solutions from trade printing, to account, brand and colour management, online printing as well as remaining committed to graphic design.
