World’s largest printer makes US$150m press order

The purchases, at an aggregate value of US$150m, were made at the drupa expo and will significantly expand the capacity of the printer’s installed equipment base, which currently leads the industry as the most modern and technologically advanced.

Specifically on order are eight Heidelberg 3000/32 presses and two Man Roland Lithoman presses. Both models boast a 64-page format, making them particularly well suited for high-speed, high-quality magazine and catalogue production.

Thomas Quadracci, Quad/Graphics president and CEO, says, “Efficiency and flexibility are mission critical to meeting our clients’ needs. We’re confident that the 64-page presses’ ability to double output while reducing makereadies will meet our productivity requirements going forward and further cement our competitive advantage.”

All ten presses will be installed at various Quad/Graphics locations over the next three years and will be equipped with a variety of QuadTech-designed auxiliary controls, including the closed-loop QuadTech Color Control System on ICON with Instrument Flight, QuadTech Register Guidance System with MultiCam, QuadTech Ribbon Control System with MultiCam. Also included are QuadTech vertical stackers/bundlers, and other computerised components.

Since 1975, Quad/Graphics has purchased more than 130 web offset presses.
