Amcor releases ninth sustainability report

The results were published in Amcor’s 2011 Sustainability Report, the ninth to be released by the company. The report outlines Amcor’s efforts in the five key areas of economy, marketplace, environment, workplace and community.

Commenting on the report Ken MacKenzie, managing director of Amcor says, “Looking back, 2010-11 was an important year for the progress of our sustainability goals. It was the first time we reported a full year of performance inclusive of the acquired Alcan Packaging sites and our first EnviroAction target period concluded five years after its initiation.”

Amcor’s total green house gas emissions in 2010-11 were 11.3 million tonnes compared with 7.62 million during the company’s 2005-06 baseline and 6.88 million tonnes during 2009-10.

However the report also showed results of Amcor’s “legacy sites” which exclude the newly acquired Alcan facilities. For 2010-11 these sites emitted 6.74 million tonnes, a one per cent decrease from the year before.

Amcor achieved a 46 per cent reduction in municipal water use intensity in Australasia to 1.3 billion litres, down from 4 billion litres during the 2005-06 baseline.

The packaging giant also reported a 59 per cent reduction in waste to landfill to 77,000 tonnes, compared with 167,000 tonnes in 2005-06.

MacKenzie continues, “We met our water reduction target and reduced our waste to landfill by nearly double our target.

“We have reported an increase in greenhouse gas intensity for the new Amcor, however, this increase is largely due to the recent acquisition of a more greenhouse gas intensive product portfolio.

“For the legacy Amcor sites, our GHG intensity continued the downward trend.”

According to Amcor, the report has been prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) Sustainability Reporting Guidelines (2006) and AccountAbility’s AA1000 Assurance Standard (2008).
