Anzpac, a wholly-owned subsidiary of British American Tobacco Australia (BATA) based in the Sydney suburb of Smithfield, is primarily focused on the supply of printed cigarette cartons for BATA. The New Toyo Group justified its acquisition on the basis that it will “enable the Group to secure a significant portion of the cigarette printed carton market in the Asia Pacific Region.”
Anzpac is also involved in the supply of folding cartons for the fast food, confectionery and cereal markets.
“This is in line with the Group’s strategy to expand its printing and packaging business regionally and establish a position as a leading print packaging group in the region,” the Toyo company said in a statement.
Under the deal, Anzpac will be operated as a Hong Kong-based joint venture between New Toyo and one of its subsidiaries, the Malaysia-based Tien Wah Press Holdings.
The deal also includes a seven-year supply agreement with BATA for printed cigarette cartons to BATA’s interests in Oceania, as well as Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam.
“Competition between packaging companies in Australia is intense,” said New Toyo chief executive Gary Yen. “Consolidation and utilisation of synergies is often seen amongst the players in the packaging industry in Australia.
“However, the Board is confident Anzpac will be able to manage the competition risk as Anzpac has an established track record in the industry and a long standing relationship with its major customers.”
