The competition required entrants to create a short video which celebrates paper and creativity. The video had to address the statement ‘paper is important to the design process because….” and aimed at an audience of fellow creatives.
The winner of the competition was Cloud White from There Design, the finalists were Katherine Hall from Design and Opinion, Olivia King and Nathan Leong from The Distillery, Shelly Read from Artists Behind Cameras and Stephanie Caruso from the Fizz Group.
Craig Brown, CEO, BJ Ball Group was one the judges, he says, “The videos were fantastic and creative. It was always going to be a tough decision, it has been enjoyable.”
Tony Bertrand, marketing and business development manager, BJ Ball Group says, “The design community is really important to us and we look at these sorts of competition as something we will do more regularly. We want to engage with the design community and we want the design community to engage with us.”
The winner Cloud White says, “It was great to see BJ Ball organising this competition – I think any kind of creative competitions are a good opportunity to work on something non-client related which you can make as obscure as you like, and they usually create a great buzz in the industry. It was an interesting choice to ask people to make a video, but that was something which was also interesting to do – working on something that you wouldn’t usually get the chance to work on, especially being primarily a print/branding designer myself.”
The prize includes two flights to New York City, with four nights’ accommodation in Manhattan, a day trip to the Mohawk Paper Mill in New York, a visit at design agency Pentagram and US$1000 spending money.
“The competition entrants showed the high level of creative strength that exists within the graphic design community in Australia and New Zealand. Our 5 ‘Silver Ball’ recipients showed that the competition was tightly contested. I would like to thank each entrant who took the time to create their video and submit it to the 2012 BJ Ball competition. We are now looking forward the Mohawk BJ Ball Show in May 2013.” Bertrand concludes.
