DS Labels installs $1m label printer

Sydney printer DS Labels will this week install a Screen Truepress Jet L350UV to expand the range of its short-run label offering.

The Marrickville outfit is the first company in the Asia Pacific to install the $1m label printer, after it arrived in Australia last July as the centrepiece of reseller Jet Technologies’ new demo centre.

DS Labels managing director Deane Sproule says he spent a year looking at 40 printers before eventually settling on the L350UV to offer clients more options for short turnaround work.

“We have always specialised in the production of labels requiring high quality with short lead times and in short runs if needed,” he says.

“Our short run work has been produced either on one of our letterpress machines or a small benchtop Rapid inkjet printer which, although good, is limited where stocks are concerned.”

The L350UV can print on 35 locally-available label stocks, hugely increasing the products DS Labels can economically offer for fast turnaround work.

Jet director Jack Malki says the long buying process has been a close collaboration of running tests, printing small live jobs, addressing questions, and helping with the business model.

“We are confident that he has made the right decision and will see many new avenues for short and medium run label work emerge as a result,” he says.

DS Labels also installed a Smag E-Cut finishing line to go with the new printer.

With the sale going through, Screen is keen to drum up more sales by rushing in another L350UV from Japan instead of the planned Truepress Jet 520 inkjet web press ‘since the label market is buoyant and we now have our first customer’.

“Interest is far higher in digital label production than high volume inkjet for transactional, direct mail and book printing,” Screen Australia managing director Peter Scott says.

The inkjet UV label press features a 350mm maximum web and 322mm print width and speed up to 50 metres a minute.

It is designed for high uptime demanding productivity with up to 16.1sqm a minute of full colour printed labelstock delivering industry-leading throughput.
