Four tower upgrade for outback newspaper

The new Goss tower expected to come into operation in mid September, will greatly increase the colour capacity of the outback newspaper’s existing Goss Community Press, according to circulation manager, Rod Niemann.

“This is a big event for us,” he says. “Our readers and advertisers have been patient, but they constantly ask us when the additional colour is coming. The Saturday paper in particular, is always very tight for space and we’ve had to try to keep it down to 24 pages just to get some spot Colour,” says Niemann.

Niemann says after 100 years of operation, the new tower will give customers a better product and change the way the newspaper operates.

“What we’ve been able to do up until now is spot colour. That is, printing with only a few colours. The new tower system will allow us to produce full colour photos and text, as well as spot colour, so it will really make a difference when our first full colour issue is printed,” he says.

“The advantages in colour mean that we’re looking at changes across the board in regards to the way we operate. Before this time we’ve used QuarkXpress, now we’re thinking of using Adobe InDesign, and we’ll probably need retraining,” says Niemann.

The independent Barrier Daily Truth, is located in the mining centre of Broken Hill in Western NSW and published six days a week. The newspaper has a circulation of approximately 6000, most of whom are direct subscribers from the local area.

The Goss Community press is one of the world’s most popular web presses, with more than 35 000 printing units installed around the world. As a single width, one plate-around web offset press for printing colour newspapers and semi-commercial products, the Goss Community press, is capable of printing at speeds up to 35, 000 cph on both coated and uncoated paper.

With quality accredited global design and manufacturing capabilites, Goss International offers a wide range of web offset press systems and enhancements for its presses and will accommodate the specific needs of its customers.
