According to a recent survey by the Graphic Arts Services Association of Australia (GASAA), 41 per cent of survey respondents admitted to using freeware fonts for design and production purposes for at least 10 per cent of their work, with six per cent saying they almost exclusively use free fonts from the internet.
A further six per cent said between 10 and 30 per cent of their creative jobs were done with freeware fonts, while a further 24 per cent said between 30 and 50 per cent of the fonts they used were freeware.
GASAA executive officer Garry Knespal says although the majority – 58 per cent – said they rarely or never use free fonts, the results were still concerning.
“The proliferation of freeware fonts just adds to the problems for output service providers, with text flow and other font related issues still a problem in the industry,” says Knespal.
