The retail chain, now the only nationwide bookseller, will launch the D Publishing service in October.
Dymocks chief executive Don Grover said: “This is publishing that is author-pushed, not publisher-pulled. This will take a lot of the mystique out of publishing. It reinvents what it means to be a book retailer.”
Books will be produced in South Australia on Griffin’s short-run digital kit, including its B&W HP T350 press, which the company installed earlier this year, as well as its Xerox Book Factory and Ricoh ProC900.
Published materials will be available for order from Dymocks’ e-commerce site, with the potential for works to be also be sold in-store.
Griffin has specifically developed a new data-send platform to automate orders from Dymocks.
Michael Allara, general manager of e-commerce for Dymocks, told ProPrint that a number of book printers had been approached but Griffin won out.
“Griffin is a fantastic operation. This is an Australian initiative for Australian publishers and Griffin is a well-known Australian company,” said Allara.
“We needed a partner that could provide high-quality print and print on demand, and Griffin could do both of these and much more.”
