Griffin tells publishers environmental impact of books with carbon calculator

The calculator provides customers with a detailed analysis of the carbon impact if printing with Griffin, taking into account raw material manufacturing, production, energy consumption, transport and waste disposal.

The system was developed to tie in with international standards ISO 14040 for lifecycle analysis and 14064 for greenhouse gas measurement.

Griffin Press general manager Ben Jolly said the company was continually working to reduce its carbon footprint.

“The carbon calculator provides Griffin-specific calculations to enable our customers to reduce the footprint of manufacturing their book by calculating the number of carbon offsets that can be purchased should they choose to do so,” he said.

“These carbon offsets can then be purchased in the marketplace, or we can provide a quote from certified carbon offset suppliers.”

Griffin brought in a third-party company Perenia Carbon to perform a complete greenhouse gas inventory assessment of its business.

National sales manager Warren Griffin told ProPrint that publishers were concerned with monitoring their carbon footprint, and the calculator would serve as a useful monitoring tool for them.

The move coincides with Griffin’s installation of an HP T350 inkjet web press, which is expected to be up and running this month.
