Heidelberg makes Aussie sale of CX 102 and signs Konica digital agency

Chief executive Bernhard Schreier said the manufacturer took orders for around 900 printing press units and more than 90 finishing machines at the show.

Alastair Hadley, general manager of sales, marketing and product management at Heidelberg ANZ, said there had been strong interest from Australian and New Zealand visitors.

He added that Australia's first Speedmaster CX 102 had been sold to an unnamed Victorian printer.

"We anticipated that about 100-120 Aussie customers of interest to us were going [to Ipex]. I don't have the full list but about two-thirds or 80% of those came through the stand," said Hadley (pictured, with CX 102).

Heidelberg ANZ went into the show with the aim of clinching sales from printers still sitting on the fence ahead of their trip to Ipex.

"We don't normally get surprise orders from a show, especially not an overseas show. But by the fifth day, we had hit a target with those customers who had said they'd make their decision at Ipex," said Hadley.

Heidelberg ANZ also took a tour group of local printers across Germany and the UK, taking them to Ipex for the first three days of the show.

Meanwhile, the vendor also used the show to formally ink a deal to distribute Konica Minolta digital equipment in Australia.

Hadley said the offset vendor had been looking at potential digital partners in Australia for some time, and Konica Minolta "ticked all the boxes – willing buyer, willing seller".

He stressed that this was a local deal and not connected to Schreier's announcement that Heidelberg was on an international hunt for a digital partner. But he did concede that Germany would "undoubtedly" be looking closely at the Konica deal.

The tie-up is a sales model only, with Heidelberg shifting Konica's production devices: the Bizhub C6501, Pro120 and the new C8000 machine. Konica will continue to carry out the training, installation and service support through its six state offices and regional dealers.
