Hero cuts off bottlenecks with Polar

Trade printer Hero Print is bringing in two new Polar Finishing lines from Heidelberg to banish bottlenecks and keep turnaround times ticking for its national customer base. John Tsiknis, production manager with Hero Print, says the two Polar N115AT guillotines will deliver a 40 per cent productivity increase in finishing and smooth out its workflow. He says, “As a trade printer, anything we can do to speed up time to market is of great benefit to our customers. The new guillotines are a big step up.”

The auto-trim pull away table for waste materials was a particular time-saving drawcard for Hero; Tsiknis says, “We do a lot of cuts on a sheet and the auto-trim table is a feature that really impressed us as it really impacts turnaround time.” The machines will call the company’s Sydney offset and digital production facility home, replacing two older Polar cutters. Tskinis says Hero is sticking with Polar for the resilience of the machines. He says, “When you combine the benefits of the Polar machines with the service and support offered by Heidelberg it’s a winning combination.” One Polar includes an LW1000-4 Lifter option for lifting pallets to a working height, an RA-4 Jogger for airing and jogging sheets prior to cutting and aligning them into perfect blocks ready for cutting, and the EL130 Transomat for unloading. Heidelberg says the high level of automation on the Polar N115AT, with or without optional extras, makes the cutting process seamless, and improved features deliver OH&S benefits. Hero Print’s Polar guillotines are driven by Heidelberg’s Compucut software, which generates pre-settings from CIP files and loads the correct cutting program into the machine. Tsiknis says, “The computer on the guillotine automatically identifies the job and pulls the file data from the system. We can also store the job data so repeat work can be produced quickly and with the same quality assurance.” Data retrieval can be done either by using a barcode scanner or the main control screen on the machine. A new 22inch touch screen is designed to provide more screen functions and better operator ease. Hero Print also operates an offset and digital plant in Perth, and a digital plant in Melbourne, to supply nationwide. It employs more than 80 people, and has been in operation for 16 years.
