According to the manufacturer, the launch of the VIM-JT Direct Plate System means for the first time printers can cash in on all the cost- and timesaving advantages of CTP technology, without having to invest in an expensive dedicated platesetter and without employing any chemical processing or special inks.
Bill Sutton, national manager J.L.Lennard Graphics told Australian Printer the new system allows printers to significantly reduce their production costs without compromising quality at a time when they are increasingly under extreme pricing pressures.
He says, “The system is aimed at small offset printers who are printing conventionally. Normally they would be looking at big money for an image setter in order to run a CTP system. But with the VIM-JT, a printer running a GTO 52 size can get a CTP system as well as a printer for less than $20,000.”
Sutton continues, “This product is so new in Australia but it will certainly make a big impact in the local market. There are so many printers out there who want to go CTP but simply can’t afford it, this is a dream come true for them.”
According to VIM Technologies, the JT Direct Plate system is composed of an Epson Stylus Pro printer, a VIM RIP, a curing unit and a starting kit of JT Direct Plates. The Epson Stylus Pro printers supported include the popular 3800, 4880, 7880 and 7900 models.
The company adds that no modifications to the inkjet systems are required. The plates are imaged using Epson’s Ultrachrome K3 or HDR aqueous pigmented ink and then heated in a simple curing unit for two minutes before going to press.
Around five systems have been installed in Australia to date, Gary Comerford, partner of Muswellbrook-based print shop Comprint Solutions says by brining CTP in house with the VIM-JT the company has reduced running time and cut costs.
He says, “Previously if we made a mistake on a plate we would have to wait at least 24 hours for a new one, but now that we have control of the plate making process in house we can replace a plate in five minutes, which to offer customers faster turnaround times for customers with urgent jobs.”
The manufacturer also outlines that the VIM-JT polyester and aluminium plates can be used on virtually any small- to medium-size offset press with conventional dampening. Both plates use the VIM proprietary coating technology to provide high quality, process-free printing results.
