Lane changes with Canon web inkjet

Philip Lane, owner of Lane Print and Post, told Australian Printer, “We are offset and transactional printers with mailing facilities. We plan to change from mono transactional printing to fully variable colour documents without the need to pre-print base stock shells, as well as transition other offset printing to the ColorStream.”

The ColorStream system will be installed with an inline finishing solution from Lasermax and fully integrated into variable data workflow management software as part of Canon Professional Print’s offering. Lane says, “The ColorStream increases capacity and productivity by 1200 per cent and speed to market by 500 per cent. Almost everything requiring variable information as well as shorter run books, magazines and journals will be produced on the ColorStream.”

Damian Schaller, marketing manager at Canon Professional Print, told Australian Printer, “The due diligence undertaken by Lane Print and Post was conducted over a long period. Canon Professional Print assisted Lane throughout this period to evaluate not only new business opportunities but assess current offset print volumes to migrate to the inkjet press. The ColorStream proved time and again that its credentials as a high quality print output were significantly better than any of the competitors.”

Lane Print and Post has been in operation as a commercial printing and mailing company for over 40 years and is one of the largest privately owned printing and mailing companies in Australia. The company employs some 70 people and the directors consist of three brothers: Peter, managing; Phillip, sales; and Graeme, administration. The company does a variety of work including pre-press, offset printing, digital printing, mail inserting, polywrapping, binding and finishing, and online portals. In 1992, the company purchased new premises at Camden Park and further extended these premises in 1997 to a total of 8000sqm.

Colin McKenzie, national manager for Digital Web Press Technology Canon Professional Print, told Australian Printer, “The defining moment for Lane in choosing the ColorStream was when they understood the green credentials of the system. With the support of the Canon Sustainability team, Canon assisted Lane to prepare a business case for the Ausindustry Clean Technology Investment Programme. It became clear that the features of the ColorStream such as less power requirements, significantly less paper waste, printing from start-up and with a pause option for visual checking, the ColorStream was a clear winner over the competitors offerings.”

Lane adds, “The Canon team has been professional and supportive towards us. To succeed in the print industry you must have a strong business plan, clear vision and an element of risk.”

McKenzie concludes, “Over the journey of this sale cycle, most of the Canon Professional Print Digital Web Press Technology team were involved, with a great team result. Well done.”
