Madman celebrates ten years in print

Victorian-based Madman Printing is celebrating ten years in the print business, and has purchased a new Heidelberg Polar 66 guillotine for the company’s digital work to mark the occasion.

Dustin Pullin, managing director of Madman, says, “We’ve just turned ten and that’s good news for everyone, especially in a market where all we hear is doom and gloom. We’re producing great work, have a sound base of clients, and are constantly looking at ways to work more efficiently.” When it comes to the company’s recipe for success, Pullin puts it down to ‘Loving what you do, and letting your clients know it’. He says, “Enjoy serving clients rather than just doing it for a job and saying, here you go, easy print. We don’t operate like that,” he tells Australian Printer. Known primarily for its services for the entertainment industry, particularly with DVD packaging, Madman Printing opened in Collingwood in 2003. Having outgrown its original premises, it is now based in the Heidelberg West 10km north-east of Melbourne’s CBD. During its decade of operations Pullin says the business has definitely got tougher. “The market is sort of bedding down, everyone’s sticking to what they know,” he says. However, as times get tough, printers band together. He says, “We’ve always looked after other printers, especially with trade work, if I can help them out. I had a situation where I needed help from a competitor just down the road. He said, oh, you’ve helped me out before, no problems, I’ll help you out this time. Probably ten years ago that might not have been the case.” He adds that the company’s birthday present, the Heidelberg Polar 66 guillotine, is so far serving them well. “We had an older model guillotine that was a bit of a toy in all honesty and didn’t have the capacity to manage an increased volume of digital jobs. So we decided to get another Polar – we put in our first last year, the big brother to this one. The boys love it. It’s fast and highly accurate. “We signed up for the new Polar and within a week it was installed and operational. That pretty much sums up the relationship we have with Heidelberg – they’ve been with us from the start. They respond quickly, and support us whether we are buying new or secondhand, a big ticket item or a small cutter.” Heidelberg has also congratulated the Madman team on the milestone. Shane Hanlon, head of product management and remarketed equipment, Heidelberg, says, “We congratulate Dustin and the Madman crew on clocking up ten years. This is a lean, efficiently run business with its eye on service and a can-do attitude. But they also know how to have fun and they’ve created a great culture within the business that’s reflected in their success.”
