Alan Fahy, chief executive of McPherson’s Printing Group told Australian Printer for the past several years the company has been implementing a number of strategies to reduce its environmental impact and the ISO certification provides official recognition.
Fahy continues, “Reducing the environmental footprint is the socially responsible thing to do and it sends out a good message that print is sustainable and this is something the industry needs to get out.”
McPherson’s has installed a recycling system for all water that runs through its plate room, as well as tanks to collect rainwater from the plant roof. Together, these measures have reduced the printer’s annual consumption of drinking water by 70 per cent.
The company recycles all its photography products, aluminium printing plates, rubber blankets, paper, paper dust, plastics and timber. It has also subscribed its fleet of corporate vehicles to non-profit organisation Greenfleet Australia, which has planted trees to help offset vehicle emissions.
Fahy says, “Most of our initiatives have had a short pay back in one way or another. I think in the future ISO will become essential for printers so we chose to do something now.”
