Today marks RU OK? Day – a national suicide prevention day which was founded by the late Gavin Larkin in 2009. RU OK? Day reminds us that everyday is the day to ask if those around you are OK and start a meaningful conversation which could save a life.
RU OK? Day says research shows that four in 10 Australians feel asking someone “are you OK” is a conversation better had with an expect.
But the organisation is keen to point out that you don’t need any qualifications to have an RU OK? conversation.

“The work of health professionals is vital, and their value cannot be underestimated however can can all play a role in supporting the people in our world,” RU OK? Day says.
“You don’t need to be an expert to have an RU OK? conversation. Listening and giving someone your time might be just what they need to help them through.”
To help with these conversations, Man Anchor, a grassroots mental health and wellbeing group that provides mental health education workshops for businesses, schools and community groups around Australia, has also released a useful check sheet for what to look out for when it comes to mental health.
Man Anchor was set up by printing industry identity Steven Gamble and Man Anchor’s website is loaded with helpful information about mental health and how to have conversations around that.
Included is a free #LetsTalk Mental Health poster which can be displayed at home, in the office or at schools.
