Simon Peppercorn, national manager, learning and development for Printing Industries says experience with the Sustainable Green Print (SGP) programme during 2009 highlighted that the majority of printing companies in NSW had not effectively mapped their energy consumption processes, or established objectives and targets for energy reduction.
In conjunction with the NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (DECCW), Printing Industries says it is working to develop a workshop which will help printers achieve the following outcomes:
- Improve awareness of energy use and its link to climate change
- Identify energy consuming processes and efficiencies of these processes
- Establish objectives and targets and develop plans for increasing the efficiency of energy use
- Engage staff in behaviour change initiatives for energy reduction/efficiency
- Implement action plans and analyse and report on results
- Assist participating businesses to achieve an 20 per cent or greater reduction in energy use over a 12-18 month period
Peppercorn says, “Once developed, we will be offering this workshop free to the first 50 printing companies. After that, depending on demand, this workshop will be available to SGP participants as an optional module to the SGP training programme, at a cost to be determined.”
He continues, “Involvement will require attendance at a one-day developmental workshop and later to provide access to member’s sites for an energy reduction evaluation by one of the environmental consultants involved in the project.”
The Association adds participation in the pilot group and subsequent workshops will be available on a first come first served basis and interest is expected to be high.
