Following on from a haul of nine golds at last year’s awards, Platypus managed to pick up the Judges’ Special Commendation award for 2009 along with Printpoint Australia, which finished with three golds for the night.
Crystal Media Group also had a successful evening, collecting five gold awards, including the Judges’ Choice award. D&D Colour Printing also collected five golds, while Bayfield Printing and Cornerstone Press both notched hat-tricks.
Printing Industries Queensland general manager Neal McLary said that notwithstanding a slight fall in the number of entries, competition was fierce across all categories, with the ‘digital’ categories particularly well contested.
“All in all, it was a grand finale to the national PICA season and we are looking forward to some tough competition for the National Print Awards,” McLary said.
The event took place at the Brisbane Sofitel Hotel on Saturday night, with the theme of ‘Saturday Night Fever’ perfectly exemplified by the choice of band Boogie Knights to complete the evening’s festivities. Stand-up comedian Fiona O’Loughlin also provided entertainment.
Queensland rounds out the list of state-based PICAs for 2009, with the National Print Awards set to be held at the Darling Harbour Exhibition and Convention Centre in Sydney on March 26.
