The paper merchant says the range was made carbon neutral by offsetting manufacturing emissions with Verified Emissions Reduction credits (VER’s) and emissions from purchased electricity with Renewable Energy Certificates (REC’s) from Green-e certified windpower projects.
The source of Mohawk’s 7,000 tons of carbon equivalent VER’s is the DesPlaines Landfill and Emission Reduction Project, located outside of Chicago, which generates clean power from landfill gas.
The purchased electricity used to make these carbon neutral papers is offset with Renewable Energy Credits (REC’s) from windpower projects from two renewable energy market leaders, 3Degrees and Sterling Planet.
According to Raleigh, Mohawk purchases enough REC’s to match 100 per cent of the electricity used in their operations. Green-e verifies and certifies Mohawk’s purchases of (REC’s) to ensure sure that they meet strict environmental and consumer protection standards.
