Ricky Bannister appeal raises $55,000

AFL superstars have helped the printing industry raise almost $55,000 for Ricky Bannister.

Heidelberg held a fundraiser on 20 August for its former employee, who broke his neck in a horse riding accident in April.

The function attracted 90 guests, including Bannister's brother, Jordan, who used to play for Carlton and Essendon and is now an umpire. Other guests included former players David King and Mark Maclure and prominent journalists Gerard Whateley and Mark Robinson.

More than $54,000 was raised on the day, in part due to a $5,000 donation from the Full Colour Trust, a New Zealand organisation that supports needy people from the printing industry.

Heidelberg managing director Richard Timson said: "The turnout to support Ricky was fantastic. This industry is great at supporting its own and we were incredibly pleased with the result. I know that Ricky and his family are very thankful for the kindness and generosity shown to them in this time of need."

The fundraising tally looks set to climb even higher following the donation of a unique art piece for auction. The artist, Neville Smith, owns one of New Zealand’s largest collections of wooden type, according to Heidelberg.

"Smith is an award-winning collage artist and he has generously donated an amazing piece of work that features wood type dating back to the mid-19th century.

"The collage contains 120 pieces in total and features elements used in letterpress printing, brass, lead, and wood with a copper electrode. This one-off collage is valued at $5,000."
