Ricoh to launch toner scents

In a breakthrough development digital press supplier, Ricoh is to launch custom scent cartridges on its best-selling Pro C 7100X digital colour press. Ricoh says its engineers, led by its chief scientist Dr Noshi Mylunchan Dibashu, made the game-changing development following years of research. Henryk Kraszewski, production print product and marketing manager says, “We can now offer an inline sensual delight to the public; with touch, see, feel and smell in one printed communication package – there is no way the internet can beat that.”

The toner scents will be available until April 1, 2017

The standard collection includes roses for wedding invitations and Valentine Day cards, freshly baked bread to delight frequent buyers, roasted coffee for coffee shop cards, and chocolate for packaging and DM. Ricoh can also create custom scents, for instance a smelly sock scent for birthday cards that mums can give to their teenage sons to let the kids know what mums face every morning. Kraszewski says, “I think the one that will generate the most interest is the custom scent of old banknotes, I’m sure Australian printers will be rattling these off to remind themselves of the days when having a printing press was like having a license to print money.” The company has developed a way of inserting scents into the clear toner using micro-capsules, that can be printed using the fifth colour station currently used for printing white or clear. The scents are released when heat is applied through the fusing process. Kraszewski says, “The new scent cartridges will only cost a few cents per copy and to delight the senses will make complete sense to any sensible business person.” Ricoh says the scents will only be available from today until April 1 next year.
