Under the new strategy current restrictions will be considerably eased, and will allow for a huge range of signage options that some believe could make Brisbane CBD the antipodean equivalent of Times Square, PIccadilly Circus or the Ginza in Tokyo.
The new directive applies to both electronic and printed signs and allow options including giant banners mounted on scaffolding of construction sites; blimps; transport infrastructure signage on overbridges, abutments, piers, and mobile signs on trucks parked at the roadside.
Under the new laws, advertising on footpath dining furniture such as umbrellas and windbreaks will be allowed, but will be restricted to the name of the business or the brand of a product sold on the premises.
The categories of signs allowed without a licence under the new laws will almost double from 16 to 28 and the categories requiring a licence will be reduced by a third from 31 to 21.
