St Ives SP Group moves superlarge with KBA

A KBA Rapida 205 jumbo five-colour sheetfed press with coater and UV equipment is to be installed at SP Group’s Redditch site. The Rapida 205, with its maximum sheet size of 1510 x 2050 mm offers new horizons for the printers of point of sale displays.

SP Group joint CEO Simon Ward says the company will utilise the 205’s unique substrate flexibility, printing on a wide variety of papers, boards and plastics. A large format KBA press is no stranger to SP Group; their Burnley plant runs a KBA Rapida 162a sheetfed press.

Simon Ward comments: “This investment opens up new and exciting opportunities to SP Group; it will further expand our arsenal of leading edge equipment thus allowing us to provide ever more flexible solutions to our clients.”

On behalf of KBA UK, executive sales director Mark Nixon adds, “We are delighted to supply the UK’s leading POS company with a press of this size and capacity. This investment indicates that litho is truly operating and succeeding in the traditional screen marketplace.

“The size, speed and capability of the Rapida 205 have proven in trials with SP Group to be a real must-have product in their armoury. This further cements KBA’s leading position in this market segment.”

St Ives plc acquired SP Group in September 2004, substantially increasing the scale of its point of sale printing activities.

Today SP Group employs over 600 and operates two sites at Redditch, one in Birmingham and another at Burnley. The Group offers sheetfed offset, screen and digital printing and a wide range of added value services to its sector’s blue chip client base.
