Sustainability in Australian screen printing to compete with Europeans

This comes as calls are made by the Australian Conservation Foundation’s Director of Strategic Ideas, Charles Berger, for more direct action to be taken by media bodies in regards to environmental responsibilities.

Active Display Group, based in Melbourne’s outer suburbs, has purchased new machinery that not only enhances print quality and speed to market, but dramatically reduces the environmental impact synonymous with this highly consumptive industry.

This has been achieved through significant capital investment in technology and machinery sourced from Switzerland, Italy, France and Denmark, as well as some locally developed systems. Active is now in a position to match, and arguably, surpass the environmentally advanced operations of European screen printers, according to Active Display Group’s Managing Director, David Gittus.

Specifically, the introduction of a Swiss designed ‘Luscher JetScreen DX’ direct-to-screen laser imaging system has eliminated the use of tens of thousands of square metres of PVC printing film annually, and a French ‘Chim
92′ closed system screenwash line has eliminated the discharge of Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOC’s) into the sewer, as well as significantly reducing water usage. Both systems are fully automatic and virtually remove manual handling of bulky printing fames.

“While others in Australia are talking about taking action, we’re actually doing something about it,” said Gittus.

Until now, large-format screen printing companies in Europe have had a performance advantage over local printers in terms of quality, efficiency and environmental impact.
