The company says the data used in its calculations is based on annual averages of specific paper machine lines, the figures refer to CO2 emissions.
Päivi Rissanen, environmental manager for UPM says, “We want to provide our customers with data in a consistent form to assist them in estimating their own impact on the environment as accurately as possible.”
Rissanen adds, “The Paper Profile includes essential information on different environmental parameters as well as product composition. The carbon footprint calculation attached to it widens the scope of the document further.”
CEPI’s Carbon Footprint Framework for Paper and Board Product was launched in November 2007, the elements included in the framework are:
- Carbon sequestration in forests;
- Carbon in forest products;
- Greenhouse gas emissions from forest product manufacturing facilities;
- Greenhouse gas emissions associated with producing fibre;
- Greenhouse gas emissions associated with producing other raw materials and fuels;
- Greenhouse gas emissions associated with purchased electricity, steam and heat;
- Transport-related greenhouse gas emissions;
- Emissions associated with product use;
- Emissions associated with product end-of-life, and
- Avoided emissions.
The Paper Profile is an environmental product declaration for professional paper buyers enabling them to make well informed product choices, it is a voluntary environmental product declaration scheme developed and provided by paper producers.
